"The music is very fun," Meester, 22, tells February's Teen Vogue. "It's edgy, like electro-pop rather than bubblegum, and you can dance to it." The album -- which she first talked about to Usmagazine.com in February -- is due next spring. Take a look at the Gossip Girl cast before they were famous. Despite her new side gig, Meester has no plans to say bye to her hit CW show Gossip Girl. Out of all of her costars, Ed Westwick "is my favorite actor to work with," she tells Teen Vogue. Meester -- who recently denied engagement rumors to beau Sebastian Stan -- also opened up about being born to a mother who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for smuggling marijuana. "I wouldn't have volunteered that information, but I've never kept it a secret either," Meester says. "It's just not my past; it's not my story to tell. "I wasn’t born in jail; I was born in a hospital," she stresses. "I lived with my mother for a few months in a halfway house, and then I went to stay with my grandmother for a few more before my mom got out. LolaDub EXCLUSIVE: Leighton Meester: I Was Born in Prison to Mom Who Was "Always There For Me" Sep 24, 2008 9:53 AM Leighton Meester's upbringing was nothing like that of her Gossip Girl character Blair Waldorf: the actress was born to a mother who was sentenced to 10 years in prison for smuggling marijuana. As Us Weekly reports in its latest issue, on newsstands now, her mom Connie was pregnant with Leighton when she entered federal prison in Texas. At 29, she gave birth while she was just beginning her sentence following a conviction for her involvement with a drug ring that smuggled 1,200-pound shipments of marijuana into the United States from Jamaica. Her father, Doug, also served time for being part of the smuggling operation. Today, Doug works in construction and Connie is a screenwriter. "Anything that her mother and I did that was questionable occurred before she was born," Doug, who split from Connie in 1992, tells Us. Meester's rough start gives her perspective today. "It makes me very nonjudgmental and open-minded," the 22-year-old tells Us. "And I think it just makes me appreciate the things that I have now." Gossip Girl director Michael Fields tells Us: "She's talked about it a little bit. She's not a person who is trying to hide it." Now, Meester and her mom - who was released in 1986 after serving only 16 months - have a solid relationship. "She's always there for me no matter what," Meester tells Us. "I swear, that woman knows everything." Connie returns the affection. "She's very gifted, she's very talented, she's very intelligent," the 51-year-old tells Us. "I love her dearly." She's on a hit show, got to make out with Entourage hottie Adrien Grenier and was recently voted New York's most stylish woman by OK! readers. "I was actually just talking about that, saying something about Milan and flipping through magazines," the actress told OK! at an event she co-hosted at the Kira Plastinina store in NYC's SoHo. "I've gotten to wear such beautiful clothes and had such a variety and it's just been so nice because I feel like I've grown so much with my style and everything because I've been able to have fun with it. It's really fun for me. So how does Leighton cope with her fame? "It's changed everything for the better," she said. "It's different, but I'm happy. This is the best life that I could ask for, and it's more than I thought it could be. I remember looking through magazines or watching movies even just a couple of years ago and being like, 'I really want to be part of that,' but not realizing what that was. I didn't understand it and now this is my life and it's so funny! I couldn't be happier." Leighton's character on Gossip Girl, Blair Waldorf, is a modern day Holly GoLightly who is obsessed with New York fashion and Breakfast at Tiffany's. In real life, the actress tells OK! she shares the same fascination with old Hollywood. "I really love old movies and I love movies with Bette Davis and her kind of style and look," she tells OK!. "I love that time period. Because of the show, I've fallen in love with Audrey Hepburn. Blair wants to live the fantasy life of Breakfast at Tiffany's or My Fair Lady, so I've gotten to see a lot of the fashion." Leighton continues, "I think the most wonderful thing about her [Hepburn] is that she set a lot of trends and they were all about being modern yet having your own kind of look because you can be stylish and trendy all you want, but at the end of the day it's about what you feel amazing in." When it comes to today's fashion, Leighton says she admires actresses like Cate Blanchett, telling OK!, "She's so classic but willing to take risks too. Her personal style is so beautiful and natural and down-to-earth and she can still wear really incredible dresses and not be taken over by it." Her own personal style she keeps tucked away inside two brand new closets she had re-done in her Manhattan apartment. "When I first moved to New York to do the show I had a little half of an entry way closet. I had clothes hanging on my fireplace, on my lamp, it was crazy," she told OK!. "When I moved into my new place, that is the one thing that I love and I had to wait two months for it but it's the biggest closet I've ever had. I have another closet in the hallway too. "I haven’t seen it yet!" she confessed to Usmagazine.com Monday evening. "I’m not going to be able to see it tonight." Why? The Florida native, 22, was busy hobnobbing with Eva Mendes, Diane Kruger and beau Joshua Jackson, and Naomi Campbell at the opening night of La Fille Du Regiment at the Metropolitan Opera in NYC. Still, she admitted, "I can’t wait to see it!" Meester has a clear idea on who she wants her character Blair to hook up with — and it isn't Nate (Chace Crawford) or Chuck (Ed Westwick). “I like neither of those guys for Blair,” Meester tells the Boston Herald. “I think both of them are kind of wrong. Nate really wronged her, and Chuck is a bad seed. Blair needs a break from love and needs to get her bearings.” On last night's episode, Blair attempted to make a comeback after she had been dethroned as the alpha female of her Manhattan school after her classmates learned she slept with Chuck and had a pregnancy scare. She also plotted revenge against Jenny (Taylor Momsen) for blabbing about it. “I figured this would happen, because it can be expected when all you do is bring other people down,” Meester says. “I think that Blair is going to have to crawl her way back to the top and there might be a few casualties along the way."
